The title of this piece refers both to the formal and metaphorical excavation inherent in the work. Collaging and then eroding both Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and a companion text of my own, where I have meticulously replaced all colloquial expressions for mental illness (crazy, loon, cuckoo etc) in Kesey's text with the word "normal", I have created a sort of excavation site through which I hope the viewer can explore the layers of culture and language that keep us from understanding the mentally ill. Ultimately, as a person with mental illness myself, it is my hope that this site can allow us to see.
